Meet the Villagers
Growing Food
The islanders grow fresh fruits and vegetables in community gardens where everyone helps out.
Making Music
Music brings the community together for celebrations and storytelling about their island home.
Sharing Resources
Everyone shares what they have, from coconuts to tools, making sure nobody goes without.
On Popu-LAND, only 100 people live together like one big happy family. They're basically the main characters in the most chill slice-of-life anime ever! Everything is decided by voting - like who gets to be the Official Coconut Snack Distributor this week (definitely the most important job, no cap).
These villagers have mastered the art of sharing and working together. Their island paradise stays perfectly balanced because everyone respects each other and the environment. It's giving major friendship goals!
The Guests Arrive
Tourists
Vacation-seekers arrive by boat, amazed by the island's beauty
Explorers
Adventurers drop in by hot air balloon to study the unique ecosystem
Rock Band
Musicians come for a one-night concert but decide to stay permanently
New Families
People seeking a better life make the island their new home
OMG, the island just became trending on Insta-Island! The population count is going ↑↑↑ faster than your TikTok follower count after posting that viral dance! Tourists are pulling up in everything from luxury yachts to rubber duck floaties (so extra, right?).
That famous K-pop band "Coconut Crush" held their beach concert, and then just... stayed? Now everyone's like "This island is a total vibe" and no one wants to leave. The population is growing faster than that slime you accidentally left in your backpack over spring break. Yikes!
Oops... We Need More Everything
Water Shortages
Long lines form at the village well as demand exceeds supply, even the animals are getting thirsty
Deforestation
Trees are being cut down faster than they can grow back to make room for new homes
Overfishing
The once-abundant fish populations are dwindling as more people need food
Waste Problems
Trash is piling up with nowhere to put it, affecting the island's beauty
The island is now giving major "resource fail" energy! The queue for the water well is longer than the line for the new limited edition Roblox toys. Even the goats are getting salty about it – they're literally posting angry TikToks like "I was here FIRST! #ThirstyGoatProblems #IslandFail".
Trees are disappearing faster than your battery when you're gaming. The river that used to sparkle like your favorite character's special attack animation? Now it's looking sus. Animals are giving everyone the side-eye like "Um, this wasn't in the brochure when we moved here." The island's vibe check is definitely not passing anymore.
The Council Circle Gets Heated
The Protectors
Some villagers want to stop new people from coming to protect what they have left
The Sharers
Others believe they should grow more food and share with everyone, no matter how many come
The Dreamers
A few suggest wild solutions like building a second island or moving to the moon
The Council Circle is giving major anime debate vibes right now! Everyone's hair is practically standing on end with those classic anime anger marks appearing over their heads! Some villagers are in their villain era, screaming "Build a wall!" while others are channeling their inner protagonist with "Share the soup!"
That one kid who always watches too much space anime? He's literally proposing a moon colony called "Popu-MOON" complete with rocket ships made from coconuts. The whole scene is chaos - if this were an anime, there'd be sweat drops on everyone's foreheads and at least three people would have fallen over backwards with their legs in the air.
Zoom Out – It's Not Just a Story
The big question energy is strong with this one: How does population growth connect to literally everything in our lives? It's like the ultimate crossover episode of humanity!
Growing Cities
Urban areas expand as more people need places to live and work
Shrinking Habitats
Natural areas become smaller as human settlements expand
Limited Resources
Clean water, food, and energy must be shared among more people
Finding Solutions
People work together to solve problems through innovation and cooperation
Plot twist that hits harder than the season finale of your favorite anime: Popu-LAND is actually Earth! And we're all NPCs AND main characters in this massive open-world game at the same time! Mind = blown, right?
Our planet is experiencing the exact same problems as our fictional island. Cities are expanding faster than your digital pet collection. Forests are shrinking like your favorite hoodie after mom accidentally puts it in the dryer. And the Council Circle arguments? That's literally what's happening in governments worldwide right now!
Think Like an IB Learner
Balanced
How do we share resources fairly?
Principled
What decisions are fair for everyone?
Reflective
What needs to change for a better future?
It's character development time! Just like your favorite anime protagonist levels up to face the final boss, we need to power up our IB Learner traits to tackle these population challenges!
Being principled means asking the tough questions like "Is it fair if I use all the water for my epic water balloon fight when others have none?" Being balanced is understanding that everyone deserves resources - not just the players with the most coins. And being reflective is like when an anime character has that deep introspective moment with dramatic music - thinking about how our actions affect EVERYTHING.
Which IB trait will be your special power in solving these planetary problems? The choice arc begins now!
